Les US et le fascisme

24 novembre 2022

Since their creation the US, as almost all democracies, have tried not to sink into authoritarianism and autocracy. This latter tendency contributes to the pollution of political discourse by introducing lies at the centre of the debate. The arrival at the White House from 2016 to 2020 of an autocratic apprentice showed the fragility of democracies. Fortunately, the mid-term elections in 2022 showed that this political discourse, once confronted with the reality of governance, did not hold water. Bolsonaro, Boris Johnson and Liz Truss, Trump didn’t really convince, true and sincere elections fired them and that’s good.

But this is not the first time that the US has had a fascist authoritarianism. Between 1935 and 1945 the US democracy experienced a difficult moment with the America First movement which had forged incestuous ties with Hitler’s Germany. These ties continued once the US went to war against the Axis, in other words Germany, Italy and Japan. At the head of this movement, America First was a modern hero, Charles Lindbergh.

For my English-speaking readers I recommend a podcast series, proposed by Rachel Maddow named ULTRA. Otherwise, in the rest of this article you will find a song by Woodie Guthrie with lyrics and translations dedicated to Lindbergh.
